2007 Summer Music Series at the Kelley Farm
Sponsored by Friends of the Kelley Farm. NOTE:
Co-Sponsorship of these events is available (and desired!)
Oliver H Kelley looked to provide cultural opportunities for
the farmers of his day to foster a greater sense of community and enlightenment, and
so we continue to enjoy performances such as these
as the Summer Concert Series continues in 2007!
The Kelley Farm
is an excellent venue for very intimate performances by outstanding
local/regional musicians. With the Front Porch as the stage and the lawn
as our grandstand, there is opportunity to picnic, dance and relax with friends.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket, or just plan on dancing all evening long!
Gates open at 6:30, concert at 7pm.
(!!! Free Parking !!!)
Most of the groups will have CDs for sale and the Friends will
have beverages available. And, the Friends can always use that extra spare
change you've got! Come support the Farm and enjoy our community-wide
music events!

Monroe Crossing is the
Midwest's premier Bluegrass and Gospel quintet. Named in honor of Bill
Monroe, "The Father of Bluegrass," they play an upbeat blend of classic
and traditional bluegrass, bluegrass gospel and heartfelt originals.
They will be inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame in November!
Minnesota
State Fair performances: Sept 2 & 3.
The Friends of the Kelley Farm are ecstatic to
be able to present Monroe Crossing on our Front Porch this year.
We know you'll enjoy the, too! |

Charlie Maguire
writes songs that capture the small details and the large
themes of our lives. This folksinger wrote all the music and songs for
the recent St. Paul production of “Orphan Train”, and he has an
inspiring new album out, “Good Eye Blind”.

We're likely to
hear songs from their newly released album "Up And Down The
River" when this returning favorite of the Kelley Farm brings
their popular bluegrass stylings back to the Front Porch.
From
an article by Tim Gihring of the Minnesota Monthly:
AT EIGHT O’CLOCK ON A SATURDAY
night, the
Hexagon Bar in south Minneapolis is so quiet you can hear the neon
buzzing in the beer signs on the walls. But within the hour, this old
school watering hole will be filled to capacity with one of the Twin
Cities’ |
|
least likely
crowds: gray-haired hip pies and twentysomething hipsters, Mohawk-sporting boys
and clog-wearing girls, drawn together by the even less-likely force of
bluegrass music. Bluegrass—the old-fashioned, stripped-down sound of fiddles and
banjos and mandolins—is currently in the throes of a revival, and the Hex is one
of its new Twin Cities hot spots. |

The Friends are
fortunate to have gotten a date on the schedule of our region's most
popular family band. Bob plays the upright bass, Deb plays guitar.
Sedra, 12, and Deena, 18, play fiddle and several other instruments
including clarinet, flute, piccolo and saxophone.
Both girls are Minnesota State Fiddle Champions. (Deena
is the youngest champion in Minnesota history. They have competed in
fiddle contests around the country including Muskogee, OK; Brandon, Mo;
Spooner, WI; and Grove, OK. The band also competed in, and won, the best
band contest at the Grove, OK contest.
In 2006 the girls made their second trip to the National Fiddle
Championship in Weiser, ID. Deena placed ninth in her age group (out of
about 80 contestants) missing the final round by one point. Sedra is the
2006 National Champion for the Junior Junior Division.
